HandyReader 1.17.260618 is NOW AVAILABLE!
Hey everyone!
I’m excited to announce that HandyReader 1.17.260618 (Build 21) is officially live and ready for download!
This update is a direct response to your feedback. I’ve been hearing the same two requests over and over again, so I made them the top priority for this release: continuous vertical scrolling and in-book text search are finally here! On top of that, I’ve added in-reading brightness control, polished the text toolbar, and squashed some annoying crashes.
Let’s dive into what’s new!
What’s New?
Continuous Vertical Scrolling Mode
This is the headline feature many of you have been asking for—repeatedly! You can now read in a continuous vertical scroll mode, gliding through your book seamlessly without having to turn pages one at a time. It’s perfect for long reading sessions and for anyone who prefers a modern, fluid reading style.
Behind the scenes, this entire scrolling experience is built from the ground up with Jetpack Compose rather than the legacy Android View system. This isn’t just a technical detail—it lays the foundation for the future. Going forward, I’ll be migrating the other page-turning modes to Compose as well, with the long-term goal of transitioning HandyReader to Kotlin Multiplatform for cross-platform support.
In-Book Text Search
The second most-requested feature is finally here: you can now search for any text directly within a book. Whether you’re hunting down a specific quote, a character’s name, or revisiting a passage, the new in-book search makes it quick and easy to jump right to what you’re looking for.
In-Reading Brightness Control
You can now adjust your screen brightness right from the reading interface—no need to leave the app or fiddle with system settings. A small convenience that makes a big difference during those late-night reading sessions.
Improvements
- Polished Text Toolbar: Refined the display and behavior of the text selection toolbar for a cleaner, more responsive experience when highlighting or looking up text.
Bug Fixes
- Squashed several crashes to keep the app running smoothly and reliably.
Wrapping Up
This release was all about delivering what you’ve been asking for. The continuous scrolling mode and in-book search have been at the top of the request list for a while, and I’m glad to finally get them into your hands. The shift to Compose for the new scrolling mode is also an exciting step toward a more modern, cross-platform future for HandyReader.
What’s Next?
I’ve also heard the feedback that the UI could use a refresh—and you’re right. Here’s what I’m planning for the next version:
- A New Home Page: A dedicated home screen that gets you into your reading faster and more intuitively.
- A Unified Library: I’ll be merging the ebook and audiobook list pages into a single, streamlined library. Audiobooks currently have a smaller user base and the feature set is still maturing, so bringing everything together into one place will make for a cleaner, more focused experience.
